Route at a glance
This trip works best as a four- to five-day summer loop, starting near Denver and moving through Rocky Mountain National Park, Glenwood Springs, Aspen, and back through Independence Pass.
The route is scenic almost the entire way, which makes it ideal for anyone who wants the driving itself to feel like part of the trip.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Head toward Rocky Mountain National Park and spend the afternoon on Trail Ridge Road, with time at the Alpine Visitor Center and one of the lakes around Bear Lake.
Day 2: Stay near Rocky Mountain and do the Bear Lake, Dream Lake, Emerald Lake, and Lake Haiyaha route. Add Sprague Lake or Moraine Park if you want something easier later in the day.
Day 3: Drive west toward Glenwood Springs, taking your time through canyon scenery and mountain towns. If the pace allows, stop near Turquoise Lake before settling into hot springs in the evening.
Day 4: Continue to Aspen and make Maroon Bells the center of the day. Add the Silver Queen Gondola or a slower walk through town if you want to keep the day balanced.
Day 5: Return through Independence Pass and Twin Lakes, then head back toward Denver with Red Rocks as a final stop if you still have energy.

Where I’d linger
The pleasure of this route is not just the landmarks. It is the rhythm between them: high roads, lake trails, one good hot spring stop, and enough open time to let the landscape settle in.
Aspen and Maroon Bells are iconic for a reason, but the quieter luxury is how often the road itself feels cinematic.
